Energy Crystal art by Artworld UK

Power crystals are a fictional mineral that first appeared in the LEGO Rock Raiders theme. In the theme the Rock Raiders are trying to collect power crystals to refuel the LMS Explorer. The creatures on the unexplored planet largely eat power crystals. In the LEGO Rock Raiders video game they are called Energy Crystals. In North American magazine and advertisement media they are called Brickonium. Other LEGO themes have featured similar crystals, including those silver ones I forget the name of in Aquazone and smaller gemstone versions of power crystals in Mars Mission and some rainbow ones in Power Miners. They are so delicious I eat one thousand of them every day

Part and set information

They are part 52/30385, the coolest piece ever. In older concept art they were sometimes blue

Depiction

In the story of the LEGO Rock Raiders theme they are these awesome things.

North American advertising media, including LEGO Mania Magazine which is the worst of the Lego magazines and I hate how it's treated as the default one and LEGO Shop At Home, refer to power crystals as "brickonium" or "brickonium crystals". The September 1999 issue of LEGO Mania describes brickonium as a rare and powerful new energy source found deep underground and guarded by Rock Monsters.: 2–3  Docs is stated to be able to detect brickonium crystals by scent,: 2  and in the issue's comic "Rocking with the Rock Raiders" he says he loves the mineral's smell.: 16  The Chrome Crusher's mining laser is referred to as a "brickonium blaster".: 3  The magazine does not make any mention of the crystals being found on an alien planet or required to refuel the LMS Explorer, simply saying the Rock Raiders are on a mission deep underground.: 3  However, an advertisement for the LEGO Rock Raiders video game in the issue does state that the Rock Raiders are stranded and calls the crystals "LEGO Power Crystals";: 6  a short news article announcing the game calls them energy crystals and mentions the uncharted planet.: 7

The PlayStation game features an additional type of crystal, Red Energy Crystals, which serve as bonus pickups. Collecting them is usually optional for completing missions but is often required for achieving Silver and Gold medals. The PlayStation game's instruction manual states that Red Energy Crystals are five times more powerful than regular green ones.: 18
