Synopsis
The LMS Explorer is struck an asteroid, sending it off-course into orbit around an unknown planet. The ship's scanners detect LEGO ore and power crystals, which are needed to repair and refuel the ship, below the surface of the planet. Docs leads a team of Rock Raiders down to the planet, selecting Jet, Sparks, Bandit, and Axle. Jet pilots the Tunnel Transporter to a sub-surface two miles underground, where the Rock Raiders see a Rock Monster smashing open a boulder to eat a power crystal. The team splits up to explore the caverns: Bandit sails a Catamaran down an icy river, Jet and Docs survey the cavern system on the Hoverboard, and Axle and Sparks search for power crystals in the Giant Drilling Vehicle. While exploring they encounter Rock, Ice, and Lava Monsters. After exploring, the Rock Raiders set up their Underground Headquarters and start drilling for LEGO ore. Docs detects a pocket of explosive gas in the rocks, which they need water to neutralize. Jet flies the Tunnel Transporter to find more crystals to power their drills, but is knocked out of her vehicle by a volcanic eruption. Once Jet returns, the Rock Raiders use explosives to blast through a pile of boulders and uncover enough power crystals to refuel the Explorer. The Rock Raiders repair the teleport platform, which was damaged in the blast, and return to the LMS Explorer with their collected resources; however, a Rock Monster stows away with them.
Layout
Rock Raiders is divided into fourteen two-page spreads, each featuring a different scene in the story. Every spread contains two text boxes, one with a few paragraphs of story and the other with a puzzle for readers to solve using details in the story or illustrations. Some of the puzzles are based on the written story in each spread; for example, the second puzzle asks the reader to figure out how many Rock Raiders can be transported based on how much power the ship has left and how much power it takes to transport each Rock Raider. Other puzzles are based on the artwork in each spread; for example, the sixth puzzle asks the reader to select the best site for a based on the displayed map layout, while the fifth and eleventh puzzles ask the reader to find the safest routes through hazardous areas.
