XYZ
XYZ was a "secret" department at LEGO Futura that intended to develop "big new projects." It is known to have existed from at least 1979 to 1981. Few results came from XYZ and the department has very rarely been mentioned by the LEGO Group.[1][2]
The only employee currently known to have worked on XYZ is Sten Schmidt,[1] who joined Futura in January 1979.[2] Schmidt was assigned to a project at XYZ that involved designing ideas for new LEGO construction systems. Schmidt worked on the project for his first few years at Futura, but it did not end up producing any results. In 1981 Schmidt began developing some of the first LEGO Dacta sets, which were also his first products released. In 1984 he moved to working on LEGO Technic; he later created the Technic beam element based on Jan Ryaa's Technic brick design.[1][2]
