Preben Dewald Hansen (1944 − 19 October 2000)[1][2] was a Danish teacher, author, and librarian. He taught at schools around Vejle for nearly two decades before he was hired as product manager at LEGO Publishing in 1987. He worked at the LEGO Group producing books until leaving the company in 1999.

Biography

In 1968 Preben Dewald started teaching at the Klostergades School in Vejle. After Klostergades closed in 1978,[3] he was hired by the Skibet School [da]. Dewald taught language, mathematics, visual arts, and music at Skibet, and worked as a librarian at the school library. He was also a lecturer at Vejle's binding centre. In 1977 he wrote a book on the city's history, Vejles historie − i korte træk: Vejle 650 år.[2] In 1985 he wrote an abridged version of Jørgen Munch-Christensen's "Undergrunden" i Vejle: besættelsen og kapitulationen for the Vejle School System.[4]

Dewald became well-known for his knowledge on children's literature outside of the school library; his experience led to him being hired as the new product manager of LEGO Publishing in 1987, replacing Erik Dyhr Thomsen. Dewald left Skibet for his new job, though he visited his former school regularly.[2][5] One of his first projects at LEGO Publishing was to produce The Golden Medallion, a comic book that would tie into the then-upcoming 1989 LEGO Pirates theme.[6][7] LEGO Publishing ceased normal operations a few years later and was renamed to LEGO Licensing,[8][5] though Dewald remained as a product developer at LEGO Futura and continued overseeing book production and licensing.[9][10][11] Dewald is listed in the acknowledgements for The Ultimate LEGO Book in 1999 as one of two employees at Futura who helped produce the book, along with Jan Harder Blæsild.[10]

In 1995 Dewald held a presentation on "design and the children of the future" at the National Association for Children, Art and Pictures[note 1] annual conference, held 16−18 November that year at the Svendborg Hostel.[9]

Dewald resigned from the LEGO Group due to illness in 1999, during the company's restructuring that resulted in around one thousand layoffs.[2][8][12] He returned to Skibet School, where he taught a grade 1 class containing children of some of his former students. After spending a summer vacation in Norway in 2000, his health worsened and he was hospitalised shortly after the start of the 2000−01 school year. Dewald died on 19 October 2000, aged 56.[2][13] Skibet's school principal Eric Andersen[14] wrote a memorial for Dewald in the Folkeskolen [da] trade magazine.[2]
