XYZ was a "secret" department at the LEGO Group created with the intention of developing "big new projects," akin to Futura. It is known to have existed from at least 1979 into the 1980s.[1]

The only currently known employee to work at XYZ is Sten Schmidt, who was assigned to it when he joined the LEGO Group in 1979. Schmidt was moved to working on LEGO Technic in the mid-1980s, where he later created the Technic beam element based on Jan Ryaa's Technic brick. Schmidt also developed some of the first LEGO Dacta sets between working at XYZ and LEGO Technic.[1]
