Since 1996 the LEGO group has published many games and interactive experiences to be played in a web browser. Most LEGO web games are built to promote a specific theme, or line of LEGO sets, and are retired once the theme is retired.[1]

Development

The LEGO Group typically commissioned third party studios to develop its web games. In 1999, LEGO Direct was formed in New York and became responsible for overseeing web game development. It worked predominantly with New York-based game studios until its dissolution in 2004.[2]

Technologies used

For nearly all LEGO web games released from 1998 through the 2000s, users were required to install browser plug-ins for Shockwave or Flash. Browsers began natively supporting interactivity in 2008 which led to web games using only built-in technologies, eliminating the need for plug-ins.
